The Commoner is one of Pittsburgh’s newest restaurants and I have the pleasure of going twice since they opened. The chef and bar manager both greeted us at our table and were very personable and excited to please. The atmosphere is absolutely beautiful and something that downtown Pittsburgh has not seen before. Located inside the newest downtown hotel, Hotel Monaco, it will quickly become one of the new hot spots for both travelers and locals.
The first thing I tried was a fantastic cocktail, which I believe they called the “mystique” or something along those lines. On my second visit I was sure to order this one again. If you are a fan of Manhattans or Boulevardiers, this is the drink for you. As the ice cube melts it turns from one to the other. The food started to flow after that. We had a variety of things to sample what it was all about and we were not disappointed. The oysters were one of the standouts. They came with their homemade hot sauce that was just to die for and I hope they consider selling it in the future to take home. I was with some meat eating family so they enjoyed the bone marrow, steak pot pie, some sort of animal tongue, and the meat board. I dove into the “roots & tubers,” which were a delicious assortment of root veggies, the wood oven cauliflower, along with the crab mac and cheese. I like to refer to myself as a mac and cheese connoisseur and this one did not disappoint. Last but not least was the dessert, which is certainly something you should save room for. I thought I was completely stuffed, but managed to polish the dessert right off.
I am excited for this place to be part of the downtown Pittsburgh scene and I am excited to see how it evolves over time. If you are an out of towner, I would think that this hotel and restaurant would be a great home base.
