Ahhhh, Coconuts, the place where you take every out of town visitor to show off how great it is living, eating and drinking in Fort Lauderdale. Close your eyes and imagine watching the sailboats and yachts go by while you are sipping on a frozen mango mojito. Can you picture it? So now you know why my town totally beats your town. Kidding. Not kidding. It really does. Regardless, this place will forever be my staple “go to” restuarant for entertaining out of towners and/or when I just need a seafood fix.
Coconuts has everything you crave when you are going out to eat – outdoor seating with fans to keep you comfortable (despite being in South FL), picturesque views of the Intracoastal, delicious food that never disappoints and great service (their motto actual is “Be Nice”). To top it all off they have enormous over sized tarpon swimming below their decks for entertaining the little ones (ok, us big ones too) and they are completely dog friendly. Go on Friday nights for the live steel drums and the house specialty paella. Or Sunday Brunch is another crowd pleaser. There are so many dishes I would recommend, but here are my family’s favorites:
Absolutely anything on the specials menu (truly, they design unique specials that are worth trying every single time).
Scoobies – delicious crab claws, covered in butter and garlic and do I need to say more.
Jerk Chicken Wings – my son eats these so quickly we worry about him choking. Our fingers aren’t safe when we reach for one off the plate.
Crab Cake Salad – almost entirely made up of just crab. Delicious, flakey, crab perfection. I dream of it.
The fish tacos and the blackened Mahi sandwich are also pretty popular.
If you go for brunch, and I heartily suggest you do, try the heirloom tomato benedict and/or their shrimp & grits and I definitely recommend their spicy version of a Bloody Caesar (garnished with pickled green beans).
Dessert – all of it.
