Shwedagon Pagoda Yangon, Yangon, Myanmar

A stunning piece of architecture, day or night and a symbol of a country that is on the brink of transformatio

Myanmar, previously known as Burma, is undergoing a very quick transformation in its process of opening up to the West. The energy that comes with the opportunity is palpable everywhere. People are happy and eager to help, to partner, to guide you…I was there on business so didn’t have too much time to do all the proper rounds, however, I did get a chance to visit the Shwedagon Pagoda.  The highlight of Yangon, the capital,  at 2,600 years old, the Pagoda can be seen from almost everywhere in the city and makes for a gorgeous site from some of the city’s rooftop bars, at night. Its impressive dome is covered in gold, and topped with 7000 diamonds. The shrine is visited by Buddhists, many of who come here on pilgrimage, and by non-Buddhists alike. It is worth spending a couple of hours taking all the different sanctuaries in.  We ended the night at Vista Bar from we could appreciate Shwedagon fully lit.
