The Waterfall Gardens and Peace Lodge is the perfect foil to the Costa Rican beach/surf holiday. So if lazing on the beach isn’t your main goal, or you would like some variety in addition to that, head to the Peace Lodge at the Waterfall Gardens. Although this lodge has been designed as a rustic feeling mountain lodge, make no mistake. This is quality 5 star accommodation in the heart of the rain forest. You will be about an hour and a half away from the San Jose airport (or an hour if you have our craxy driver and some anti-motion sickness meds).
The lodge is built into the mountain side and perches above an eco park, aviary, trout pond for fishing and an intricate set of pathways that lead you to the many beautiful waterfalls in the park. You can go to the park without staying at the lodge for a price but all guests have free access and additional hours available to them.
There are a variety of rooms and villas, the standard guest rooms having pull out options or two beds to accommodate a family. The villas are spacious and act as a private cottage for your group as well. Restaurants and service onsite are excellent – which is good because there is nowhere else to go unless you are prepared to drive some distance.
We took advantage of the fishing in the stocked trout pond, and if you actually catch one they will prepare it for you at the adjacent grill. We also did the night time frogging tour in the “froggery” at the park. Our kids got to hold a variety of frogs, including poisonous ones that have been rendered harmless by a change in diet.
In addition to the froggery and aviary, there is a vibrant butterfly enclosure and more hummingbirds than you can imagine.
We also took advantage of the excursion for zip lining to a local adventure park arranged by the hotel and it was fun, safe and professionally handled.
