Barranquilla Carnival – “Quien lo vive es quien lo goza” Barranquilla, Atlantico, Colombia

Revel in the color, music and general happiness of the 2nd largest carnival in the world.

Colombia consistently ranks among the top 3 happiest countries in the world, and this is particularly apparent in the coastal city of Barranquilla. While the city has a party atmosphere year-round, with lively music playing everywhere you go, there is nothing that compares to the 4 days of Carnival. In reality, it is not really true that Carnival lasts 4 days. The true beginning of the celebration is the end of the New Year’s eve parties. In fact, carnival music starts playing at 12:01am on January.1st and it continues all the way through ash Wednesday. But given that you are unlikely to dedicate 2 months to this party, we suggest you arrive on the Friday prior and join the celebration for the next 5 days. Saturday’s big highlight is La Batalla de Flores in which all the dance schools parade for hours through the large avenue. Be sure to reserve a seat in the shaded “palcos” or stands, or even better, try to find your way on one of the floats through a local. Barranquilla’s carnival slogan is “Those who take part, are the ones who enjoy it”, so my recommendation is to as much as possible, get in with the action and participate, dance, take it all in. There isn’t a friendlier group of people than the Barranquilleros who will be thrilled to make room for one more.
