Rose City Kitchen Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Falafel fit for a Queen at Rose City Kitchen: Levantine-style sandwiches and unique toppings.

Rose City Kitchen, hidden in a hole-in-the-wall on Queen West (near Spadina), belies its royal heritage. Prices are cheap, though most adults will need more than 2 sandwiches to feel full. Order the Egyptian topping (eggplant, chickpeas, dates, and more) on top of perfect falafel. If you’ve never grilled sliced halloumi at home, RCK is the best place to try the squeaky sheep cheese.

Overall: best in the neighbourhood, good value, moderate wait time, 4 eat-in tables. Helpful staff problem-solve any dietary need (GF, vegan).  Garlic warning: if you’re on a date, stick to the Moroccan topping. Unless you’re on a date with King Abdullah II – because the menu at this Jordanian restaurant  is fit for Queen Street.

"Rose City is another name for Petra -- a magnificent and unique city, carved into sheer rose-coloured mountain rock by an ancient industrious tribe a couple of thousand years ago. The inhabitants of Rose City traded goods initially along the Mediterranean coast, and eventually turned the city into an important junction for the international spice trade from India to southern Arabia, Egypt, Syria, Greece and Rome."
