The Calgary to Edmonton Highway is a straight shot of meh as far as a drive goes. You can make it in one go but Red Deer is the perfect midpoint for a stretch and bathroom break. The highway rest area is called Gasoline Alley – oh so appealing from a culinary standpoint. And honestly most of the places are standard fast food, road trip fare The only exception is the pie at Glenn’s. The rest of the menu is blah and I wouldn’t bother. But the pies are homemade and divine. My favorite is the Flapper Pie – a custard pie on a graham cracker crust that is a totem of my childhood in the prairies. They have an amazing selection of teas as well and you can buy some to bring home.
The pull off is on the west side of the highway but you have access from the fly overs on both sides so if you are heading north make sure to take the fly over exit because it is on the left.
