Duchess Bake Shop & Provisions Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

The Best Bakery In Canada. Everyone says so. Real ingredients- and worth every calorie.

I have been a devotee of the Duchess Bake Shop since it opened in 2009.  The treats that fly off the shelves here are enough to make this a regular pit stop for something special or just to satisfy a craving.  The story of  this place is just another reason to support it – it was opened by a self-taught woman and her then husband, they were joined by a classically trained baker whom the wife is now partners with.  They are all okay with it.  They don’t use mixes, only real ingredients…so you know exactly what you are eating, and you will be okay with it too.

On a recent visit I was reminded of the fevered intensity of shopping here sometimes.  It was remniscient of the Hunger Games.  Me and my two littles entered the store and went to the cash desk where another customer was being helped, we waited and then were greeted and offered help.  A woman swooped in from the side of me where apparently she had been guarding the last remining lemon tart.  She loudly proclaimed that she was there first…I was chill with it because I wasn’t planning on stealing her lemon tart with all the sharp cutlery around.

Anyway, after a decadent treat of a florentine cookie, some signature macarons and a lemon meringue cake, along with the best coffee made with a machine that is a thing of beauty, I headed next door to the Provisions shop.  I picked up the Duchess Bake Shop Cookbook and some tools of the trade – perhaps I will be the next baking phenom!  Or perhaps I will just keep coming back…
