I love 17th Avenue. I mean, I don’t love the difficulty in finding parking some days, but it’s where you’ll find some of Calgary’s best restaurants along a few blocks in this southwestern part of town. Ox and Angela is a gem that brings a Spanish Table to you with delicious tapas or sharing plates in a cozy and inviting atmosphere. This is a restaurant perfect for slow food – for visiting, lingering over drinks and delicious fare, and spending time actually talking to one another during dinner. It’s a must for date night or small groups. For larger groups, the menu includes a family style “Spanish Table” with some beautiful samplings at prix-fixe.
Their brunch is a beautiful thing – I’ve been known to imbibe more than a few times before the lunch hour, and a European-style tapas lunch is a wonderful excuse to bring out a lovely sangria blanco to go with
For lunch or dinner, the tapas plates are too numerous to mention, but they range from the deliciously simple (pan con tomate with manchego cheese is recommended) to their Valencian-style paella (make sure you order as soon as you arrive as it takes a bit of time) which has chicken, spanish chorizo, manilla clams, butter beans, summer peas, and saffron. Divine. You may want to order more than one plate depending on how much you’ve enjoyed the individual tapas. If imbibing is at hand, they make some incredible concoctions at their bar. Pretty much anything goes, the more creative, the better.
Finish off the evening with their cinnamon and sugar churros – and don’t feel any shame when you’re licking the chocolate sauce from the depths of the dipping bowl. We know you’ll want to. Whether you have your Penelope Cruz or Javier Bardem on your arm, you’ll be transported to an evening in Madrid.
