The historic center of Hoi An is a Unesco site, and a wonderful example of the usual coming together of cultures in a port city. The houses have wood carvings influenced by the presence of French, Japanese an Chinese cultures. Their architecture is protected with strict laws that try to ensure ownership remains within local families who actually inhabit them. We were lucky enough to visit during Chinese New Year, and highly recommend Hoi An at this time. The Chinese Lanterns contribute to the festive atmosphere and make for romantic walks at night. In terms of accommodation, the Victoria Hoi An Beach Resort and Spa was a wonderful choice. We had independent cabins with wide windows facing the ocean. Each cabin had external private showers which we enjoyed using. The resort is full of brilliantly kept gardens all around so any table is a great table to enjoy the breakfast buffet or a la carte lunch. The staff was extremely helpful and it was easy to arrange for someone to accompany us on a visit on bike to the nearby rice fields. We found Hoi An a great place to escape, relax, and enjoy.
