Whenever we go to Traverse City, Michigan, my hoomans can’t stop talking about how they have to make a reservation at Red Ginger. My mom gets unreasonably excited when she talks about their calamari. Red Ginger is an Asian fusion restaurant that is among the best of the best. It boasts many awards and was included in the Top 100 Hot Spots in America by Open Table. Red ginger was only 1 of 2 restaurants in Michigan to make that list! Although they don’t allow doggies, due to no outside seating, this is one place you can’t miss. Mom says that you can do no wrong when ordering, however, she has a few favorites that will please any palate.
Best Drink: Red Dragon Martini
-Moms is not one to order foo-foo drinks, however, this is an exception and a must try! All of Red Ginger’s hand crafted cocktails and martinis are made with fresh squeezed juices and the freshest ingredients.
Appetizer: Calamari
-This is not your usual fried, bread-laden vessel for cocktail sauce. Red Ginger’s calamari is OUT OF THIS WORLD. Mom said she has never had anything like it and I wish she would bring me some home instead of hoarding the whole thing to herself. It is rice dusted with a delicious Korean kochujang vinaigrette. It comes out light and crispy with bold flavor.
Sushi: The Tunagi Roll
-Mom says you can’t go wrong with any of the sushi rolls here, but the Tunagi roll is really something special. Eel and tuna are given a little kick with Siracha and their special Firecracker Sauce.
Entrée: Tuna Chirashi
-This melt-in-your-mouth delicious entree will blow you away. Ahi tuna from the Honolulu Fish Co. is flown in and sits upon steamed sushi rice with Napa cabbage, avocado, sweet soy and a delicious tamarind sauce. Pro tip: Order the tuna extra rare.
If you are visiting Traverse City in the summer, make sure to make a reservation, as it gets packed during peak tourist season.
