This restaurant, by Top Chef Winner and Fan favorite, Stephanie Izard opened in the summer of 2010. We first went to it in October of the same year and it was on metaphorical fire! We tried to book a table 2 weeks in advance but were told that no reservations were available for at least 3 months. BUT we were told, they always saved spots for walk ins and that if we came early we should be just fine.
Not wanting to miss out on the hot new restaurant in the reviving West Loop neighborhood we took the advice and arrived at 5:00 pm on a Thursday. The three of us felt a bit ridiculous, like we were senior citizens in Boca showing up for the early bird shrimp cocktail.
Well we were in good company because the place was hopping. In fact, the only place for the three of us to sit was at the big communal table adjacent to the bar, which was fine with us. We ordered some carefully crafted cocktails and my husband had a local craft beer. The bar and wine list changes frequently.
Then we started examining the menu like it was the shroud of Turin. Each suggestion was met with hearty concurrence, which is how we ended up with virtually the entire menu and moaning after over-indulging in Fat Bread (we should have known) and ending it with a sweet corn and bacon ice cream.
We have been a number of times since and sent people there on their visits to Chicago…no one has come away unhappy.
