The Palace of the Spanish Inquisition Cartagena, Bolivar, Colombia

A gruesome look at the history of the Spanish Inquisition at its heart.

Make no mistake, the “Spanish Tickler” is not a sex toy.

The “Holy Office,” which was a rather Orwellian name for the torture department of the Spanish Church was established in Cartagena in 1610 and carried on until 1811.

200 years of gruesome torture in the name of God.  Yikes.

The building is gorgeous and a beautifully restored example of Spanish Colonial Architecture.  Ironically it is used for many fancy ceremonies and celebrations now.  It is hard to imagine dancing the night away in the courtyard used for executions above the dungeons and torture chambers but there you have it.

The history is fascinating and the guides are disturbingly enthusiastic about relating the details of the techniques of this “zealous missionary work.”
