Saskatoon may rely a little too heavily on the aesthetics of its riverfront, but foodies will find much to love about this city. While the much-publicized Ayden may be the first destination for many gourmands, the Rook & Raven is an extremely impressive blend of quality ingredients, generous portions and attentive service. Regrettably, I had only one opportunity to eat at the R&R, but my selection of the bison braised short-ribs ($25) was rewarded handsomely. Served over mashed potatoes with “house vegetables” and a gorgeous rosemary reduction, it was exactly what I had hoped it would be: a large serving of incredibly tender short-ribs, full of deliciously complex flavours. Add in the respectable selection of brews, including many locally-sourced selections, (Black Ridge Milk Stout is a stand-out), and warm and friendly service, and the Rook & Raven represents genuine value in a city with many decent gastronomical options.
