The Byward Market has a multitide of awesome eateries. If you are looking for some serious BBQ, head to the Smoque Shack. The restaurant has a tiny patio out front and a totally pokey and unassuming entry way with the bulk of the dining room being to the rear of the space. This is a casual environment, lots of wood and a number of communal tables. The cocktail menu is inventive with a definite southern flare – craft bourbons and inspired cocktails. We showed up with a brood from ages 6 to 50 and there were no complaints around our table.
The ribs are the star item- at least they were at our table but the brisket didn’t disappoint either. Star sides included the mac n cheese, brussels sprouts and greens.
It’s messy but good.
